The Rheumatology Department at the Bon Secours Hospital,
Cork offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options.
Arthritis and rheumatic diseases are common, causing considerable
pain, suffering and disability. These effects are often greatly
helped by early diagnosis and intervention.
Together with the Physiotherapy Department the Rheumatology
service is very much involved in back pain and its management
and the rehabilitation of these patients. Neurological, Respiratory
and Cardiac rehabilitation is also undertaken by the Physiotherapy
staff in an ever-expanding department.
The introduction of major new drugs for the treatment of
Inflammatory Arthritis has resulted in dramatic improvements
in care. These results come at a cost with new drugs often
being very expensive. Indications and costs, therefore, for
new drugs pose challenges to the practising Rheumatologist
ensuring both access to all new advances in treatment are
available to all patients with arthritis.
Education of patients leaving the Department is paramount
as indeed is continuing education of medical students, post
graduate doctors and nurses as the Bon Secours is a Teaching
Hospital of U.C.C.
