| The Diagnostic Imaging Centre is a modern, rapidly expanding
facility offering comprehensive, prompt, high-quality imaging
services. This includes state-of-the-art specialised equipment
for Dexa scanning and specialised dynamic examinations, CAT
and Ultrasound scanning, together with plain film radiography.
Bone Densitometry (Dexa Scanning)
The simplest and quickest way to assess the density
of a person’s bones is by using a special type of x-ray
called a DEXA scan. DEXA is an abbreviation for “Dual
Energy X-ray Absorptiometry”. DEXA scans allow accurate
bone density measurements providing critical information
in detecting osteoporosis in its earliest stages.
A DEXA scan uses a very small amount of low energy x-rays
to measure the density of the spine, hip and other bones.
Evaluating bone density using conventional x-ray techniques
does not reveal a problem until an individual has lost at
least 30% of their bone density which can be too late. The
rate of calcium loss varies greatly and women are at particular
risk after menopause. |
