What are the reasons for screening?
- Early menopause, absence of periods or low female hormones
- If you are undergoing steroid tablet treatment
- Thyroid or parathyroid overactivity
- Chronic kidney disease
- If you have a family history of osteoporosis, particularly
if you are of lean build, have back pain, or have sustained
a fracture
What happens?
You will be asked by the radiographer to lie on
the examination table and made comfortable with sponge
supports. The lower spine and one hip are measured with
a scanning arm that moves slowly above the body. The entire
test will take approximately 15 minutes. It is safe, painless
and free from complications.
What happens afterwards?
The results will be sent to your referring
Consultant / Family Doctor.
